Chamber music theatre, commissioned by Onix ensemble of Mexico.
This is a personal work that is related to techniques and ideas common to recent compositions such as my Clarinet Quintet (2004) and Songs Between Words (2003).
They explore gestural composition – a visible and perhaps inaudible representation of music beyond music, presented here as a kind of transfiguration with which the present work ends. The work would be best presented played from memory by the flautist, positioned at the centre of the small ensemble, as if a flute concerto in miniature

Kabara II
A 1936 cylinder recording of a woman in South Africa called Kabara singing what may be a lullaby to her baby, Matabab is the only evidence we have that the Kulkhaasi language.TYhe recording becams rthe basis for my song Kabara's Lullaby. Kabara II transcribes the song for a speaking string quartet.


 Bosque para Cámara
In 2003 he was awarded a UPX bursary from CONACULTA/ Mexico to realise an installation Bosque para Cámara in collaboration with the video artist Rafael Ortega and the Latin American String Quartet. Over several months, thousands of people walked into the box where the quartet played for them apparently in a wood at the far end. As the audience drew close to the image the sound of birds gradually obscured their music, as they left, the music returned.

Homage to Shostakovitch
For SATB & String Quartet, commissioned by Phillip Parr for the Swaledale Festival, 10th June 2006 for the Pro Nobis Singers & Navarra String Quartet. This short work reflects some of the intense musical experiences that have marked me by his music. It is suffused by a slow, halting waltz, and references to the sound of the composer's name. It lasts about five minutes before drifting up into silence. Ca. 5 minutes.
